Strategies for getting the perfect rental experience:
Get the most from your vacation rental budget:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Book your rental in the Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your family qualifies for a discount.
- Booking websites typically offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Kill Devil Hills area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines contain money saving offers on local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Select your vacation dates and budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Scout's Harbour Family Bayhouse! has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly accessible on booking websites. If not, reach out to the property management company before booking your home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what is suitable for your trip.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or charges could be applied to your invoice.
- If there's a specific Kill Devil Hills beach you simply love, look for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
Additional considerations:
- Add the owner's contact information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Protect your property!
- To make sure that no damages are attributed to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas when you arrive. Contact the host right away to report your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors bothering your peace. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all belongings. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a great vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
