Tips to get the perfect vacation rental experience:
Getting the most from your vacation rental budget:
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Reserving a rental home in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property managers often offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Kill Devil Hills visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides contain coupons for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Select a group leader, select your vacation dates, and choose a budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Coastal escape, steps away from the waves! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, call the property owner before you reserve your home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, search for a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
- If there's an individual Kill Devil Hills attraction you long to visit, look for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .
Know before you go:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents lots of difficulties.
- Keep your rental home locked while you are away! Don't let burglars ruin your vacation.
- To make certain damages are not linked to your family's stay, record any problem areas upon check in. Call the host right away to report any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Be respectful. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Double-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at check-out. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a wonderful stay? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
