NCDOT operates three stormwater ocean outfalls in the Town of Kill Devil Hills. These stormwater outfalls were installed in the early 1960s. They allow rainwater to drain away from the lower areas between the highways of U.S. 158 and N.C. 12, which assists with flood prevention. (See photo gallery) The town recommends not swimming within 200 ft of this pipe. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality regularly monitors the outfall sites and collects water samples to ensure there are no contaminants that would threaten human or marine life.

Kill Devil Hills rental home booking tips:
How to get the best rental value:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Kill Devil Hills area. To get the best value, shift your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property managers typically offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Kill Devil Hills area travel guide magazines that include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Kill Devil Hills visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Selecting and booking the rightrental:
- Choose a designated group leader, select your vacation week, and select a spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Turtle's Nest: Oceanfront, pool, hot tub, theater & rec rooms and elevator! has 12 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Kill Devil Hills rental home search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is regularly available on booking pages. If not, email the property management company before booking your home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
- Visiting for a specific event? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- If your family is traveling with pets, filter your search for a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
Advice for a wonderful stay:
- Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
- Make a record of any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peace. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Keep the property locked while you are gone! Don't let crooks ruin your family vacation.
- On check-out day, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent feedback to drive future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best rental home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
