Tips and Tricks to get the best vacation property experience:
Finding your perfect rental home:
- Summertime is the most expensive season in the Kill Devil Hills area. To get the best value, try shifting your family's Kill Devil Hills trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer great temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental property up to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Kill Devil Hills area visitors guides which will include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Kill Devil Hills visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Choosing the best rental home:
- Begin by choosing potential vacation weeks and a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Lovely studio apartment with an indoor fire place has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Kill Devil Hills rentals search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is often available on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the host before you reserve the property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You'll need to establish what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation group.
- Looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental home.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
- If your group is traveling with pets, search for a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
Tips to have a terrific stay:
- Add the host's phone number to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Make a record of any issues with the property during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, intercom or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent a lot of problems.
- Be respectful. Often times, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a terrific vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
