Tips to get the best vacation property experience:
Sticking to your rental home budget:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is high season in the Kill Devil Hills area. Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is one of our best tips for saving money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Property managers often offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Many property management companies supply Kill Devil Hills area visitors guides which include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Select a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and select a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. CH219- 3 Bedroom Canal front Home with Private Dock and Kayaks! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available online. If not, contact the property management company before reserving your rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches.
- Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single event? Use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Advice for your stay:
- Be sure you get the host's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let burglars ruin your vacation.
- To ensure that damages are not attributed to your family's stay, record any problem areas during arrival. Contact the property manager immediately to relay any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be useful.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a wonderful stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
