Strategies to get the perfect vacation rental experience:
Finding your perfect rental home:
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. Book your vacation in Spring or Fall to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
- Some hosts offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Booking websites typically offer customers an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines contain offers and deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Begin by selecting vacation dates and a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. CH219- 3 Bedroom Canal front Home with Private Dock and Kayaks! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before you book your rental. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
- If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
Tips for a fantastic stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Add a note with the directions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of issues.
- Keep the property locked while you are gone! Don't let thieves ruin your trip.
- During check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent resource to find the best local scenic spots.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a great time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
