Finding the best rental experience:

How to get the best rental home value:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in the Kill Devil Hills area. To book the best vacation home within your budget, we suggest booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular Kill Devil Hills attractions and restaurants. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your group qualifies for a discount.
  • Property management companies usually offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain deals for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Select a designated group leader, select your vacation week, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Siren Sound a charming OBX beach cottage in the perfect beach location has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Kill Devil Hills rental home search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available on booking pages. If not, contact the property management company before you book the property. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Request information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental

More considerations for your visit:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. Store the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of issues.
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • To ensure that damages aren't linked to your family's visit, inspect for any problem areas when you arrive. E-mail the host immediately to record your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a great source for finding the best local scenic spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
