Strategies for getting the perfect rental home experience:
How to get the best value:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Kill Devil Hills area. Reserve your Kill Devil Hills rental home in the Fall or Spring to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Hosts sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
- Look for your local Kill Devil Hills area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guides contain offers and deals for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Planning, picking, and booking the rightrental:
- Select vacation dates and budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Sea Swept Cottage is a great beach cottage close to the beach and the sound. has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, email the property management company before you reserve your rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you must book a pet-friendly rental. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.
During your stay:
- Add the host's phone number to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental while you are out. Protect your property!
- Upon arrival, note any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all of your things. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a terrific stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
