Our top Kill Devil Hills rental property booking tips:
Cost saving strategies:
- Summer months are high season in the Kill Devil Hills area. Booking your Kill Devil Hills vacation home in the Spring or Fall is a great way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
- Booking websites typically offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Kill Devil Hills visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines have money saving offers on local accommodations and attractions.
Selecting and booking the best Kill Devil Hills rental:
- Choose a designated group leader, select your trip dates, and choose a max budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration you need. Pet-friendly w\/Hot Tub! Clean & Cute! Twin A has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the host before you book the vacation home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.
- Some properties allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
Tips to have a great stay:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. Store the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if there is a dispute.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few difficulties.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- At departure, take a walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a terrific vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
