Tricks and tips to get the very best rental experience:

How to get the best rental home value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To find the best value, consider shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • The sooner your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked early. Reserving your vacation home up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property management companies typically offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Kill Devil Hills area visitor guides which will include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by selecting a vacation week and a max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Pet-friendly oceanside home, just a 650ft walk to beach access! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is regularly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before you reserve the property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your family.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask your host about pet restrictions before booking.

Have a fantastic stay:

  • Add the property manager's information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Note any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute is filed.
  • Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your peaceful home life. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Protect your property!
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental one final time and look for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a terrific vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
