Tricks and tips to get the perfect vacation rental experience:
Sticking to a rental budget:
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in coastal NC. Booking your vacation rental in Fall or Spring months is a great way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a price reduction.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain coupons for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Start by selecting potential vacation weeks and a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Welcoming Beach Cottage With Hot Tub & Fire pit, Just 1 ½ Blocks To The Beach! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking pages. If not, email or call the property management company before booking the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
- If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly rental. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts charge additional pet fees.
- Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Tips for your stay:
- Add the host's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of problems.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would at home.
- To ensure that no damages are linked to your visit, make note of any problem areas upon your arrival. E-mail the rental manager immediately to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be useful.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a fantastic source for finding the best local spots.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Re-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at check-out. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
