Booking the best rental experience:
Money saving strategies:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To get the best value, shift your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warm weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Property management companies often offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Find a copy of your local Kill Devil Hills area magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides contain coupons for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
How to pick the best vacation rental:
- Select a designated group leader, choose your vacation dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. The Grant Atlantic has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Kill Devil Hills rentals search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is normally available online. If not, email or call the host before you book the vacation property. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your vacation.
- Some properties allow pets, but others don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property management company about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- If there's a particular Kill Devil Hills destination you crave, browse rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
Considerations for your stay:
- We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would back home.
- Document any damages to the property at check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if a dispute arises.
- Be respectful. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- At departure, take a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget anything. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent ratings to compel new bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
