(See photo gallery) The town recommends not swimming within 200 ft of this pipe. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality regularly monitors the outfall sites and collects water samples to ensure there are no contaminants that would threaten human or marine life.

Money saving strategies:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your group.
  • Property managers often offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Kill Devil Hills area visitor guide magazines which often include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. • Lock your vacation home while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Upon check-in, document any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers disrupting your life at home. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Upon check-out, take a walk-through to confirm you have not forget anything. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent ratings to compel new bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
