Strategies to get the perfect vacation rental experience:
How to get the best value:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in the Kill Devil Hills area. To get the best value, consider shifting your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer great temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Kill Devil Hills area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, travel guides have deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

- Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be respectful. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host is not available, take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent feedback to inspire new bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your review find their best rental home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
