Tricks and tips for getting the best vacation property experience:
Get the most from your rental home budget:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are high season in the Kill Devil Hills area. To book the most suitable vacation home within budget, we strongly suggest booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family.
- Booking websites frequently offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Often, property management companies supply Kill Devil Hills area travel guide magazines which often include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Filter your rental search:
- Start by selecting trip dates and a budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. 1950’s Fishing Beach Bungalow with incredible sunsets! has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before booking the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is right for your group.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or charges applied to your invoice.
- Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
More considerations for your visit:
- Add the host's contact info to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents lots of concerns.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would back home.
- To make sure damages are not linked to your family's visit, inspect the rental for any problem areas during check in. Call the property manager immediately to report your findings. If there is a dispute, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a great resource to find the best local attractions.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property one final time and look for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on good reviews to compel more bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
