Tips and Tricks to get the best vacation property experience:

When to go & When to book:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Kill Devil Hills. Book your rental property in the Fall or Spring to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Kill Devil Hills vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • The earlier you can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
  • Some property managers offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers often offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Look for your local Kill Devil Hills visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain deals for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Make a plan and pick the best Kill Devil Hills vacation home:

  • First, have your group choose vacation dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your family requires. Perfectly situated in KDH; Game room; movies, outdoor fire pit; or chill on deck has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally accessible online. Otherwise, call the host before you reserve the property. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds.
  • Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property manager about pets before booking.

More considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
  • Document any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're gone! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all of your things. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a great time? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
