The Proper Setting is a wedding coordination service that wants to make your time here “on the edge of the earth” the best experience possible.

The Proper Setting team, composed of couple Nannette and Eric Kalstead and associate Catino-Nason, boasts a combined experience of over 20 years. Involved in the wedding industry since 1995, Nannette is a designated Professional Wedding Planner with the Association of Bridal Consultants, and husband Eric has worked a number of years as a food and beverage manager, handling small to large events, including the 2002 Winter Olympics. Kerri is certified with the Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants and, along with the rest of the team, received rave reviews in Wedding Wire’s 2012 Bride’s Choice Awards.

The team says its goal is to personalize your wedding in a way that sets it apart from any other you’ve ever seen - and at the same time help you work within your budget. They aim to cater to your style - from traditional to avant-garde or from “calm and serene” to “wild and free-spirited.” They’ll even provide consultation if you want to do it yourself.

Among their ideas is a suggestion to substitute party favors for donations to the bride and groom’s favorite cause. Likewise, The Proper Setting does its share of donating, giving back to the Outer Banks community a portion of its profits.

This service says it’s committed to being the “invisible resource” for brides and their families and gets great satisfaction from the “joy, laughter, and happiness” it receives as reward for “a job well done.”

It was 1978 when Eddie and Lou Miller first opened Miller’s Seafood and Steakhouse. As a teenager, their son Brian spent his summers working in the restaurant, getting familiar with the family business. After college, Brian and his wife Beth came back to Kill Devil Hills and began working together at Miller’s. Brian and Beth officially purchased the restaurant from Eddie and Lou in 2007. A few years later they opened American Pie together, and both restaurants now carry on the Miller family tradition of quality, excellence and hospitality.

“I learned everything about the restaurant business from my parents,” Miller says. “They ran the business together for all those years, and now my wife and I are doing the same. “Throughout the summer, we’re feeding around 2,000 people a day in our two restaurants. It’s a challenge we embrace every season, and we get a lot of fulfillment from making it all work.”

The Millers focus on two main specialties: high quality foods and unparalleled service. Seafood at Miller’s is fresh and locally caught, and they serve high-quality Angus beef, fresh pastas and homemade desserts. At American Pie, guests enjoy hand-tossed pizzas and homemade ice cream.

“We put a lot of time and effort into ensuring the products we bring in are top-notch,” Miller says. “Our customers know that when they visit our restaurants, they’ll be getting the quality and consistency they’ve come to know and love.”
